Topic: Looking for a spriter...

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right place to post this, but i'm working on a web based mmo, and i'm in dire need of a sprite artist! If anyone is interested and/or willing to contribute... let me know and i'll give you a sneak peak to what i've got so far.

If this sounds interesting to anyone, shoot me an email at spritian AT spritian DOT com.

Thanks

Re: Looking for a spriter...

I've never understood the rationale behind not giving out details of a project. It's like someone trying to get me to buy a car by saying that, "It's got wheels!"

Is the attitude that casual observers will storm the server, loot the art, code, concepts and steal the project wholesale, leading to the loss of fame and fortune forever?

Really, treat it like you're bringing in an investor or something. Ya gotta sell the project!

Okay, it's an MMO... and?

Fantasy? Modern? Science Fiction? Other?

What's the basic plot?

Is there a worthwhile team behind it? And what's the scope of this anyway?

What are the sprite requirements? The size? Isometric? Color count? How many? What animations?

Any demos? Scripts? Plans?

Quiet honestly, I've got more materials available for review on my likely-never-to-be-completed game and I'm not even interested in recruiting. You want people to put in a lot of work gratis, you gotta excite them.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

Mjkrzak's right. I'd be more willing to get onboard for your project if you gave us a little info. The lack of info is a lack of trust. The lack of trust is a lack of employees in the absence of money. You don't have to give us everything by any means, but there needs to be some basic info. Ideally, what Mjkrzak said, more or less, but with some changes:

-Genre/basic aesthetic
-Proof of a programming team
-Scope
-Sprite requirements

The story stuff isn't important right now, unless you need concept guys, in which case story is best left to the concept designers after they join the team.

Plans aren't worth much unless they're organized. There needs to be a triage of sorts, so we know you mean something.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

so basically if it ain't a paying job, you gotta grab your prospective employees by the attention span

And squeeze.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

To milk it for all its hypothetical worth.

Yar.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

be firm, but gentle. It is a sensitive area, and must be treated delicately.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

lol sorry for the brief post, i did write it at 3am yesterday...

as for the run-down, it's an ajax driven mmo, consider it final fantasy 2 with an mmo aspect. Story isn't complete, but the core engine is coded and in alpha (mmo movement/interaction, music, chat, char creation, zone builder, backpack, inventory, admin tools etc)

As for sprite requirements, everything is based off a simplistic 32x32 tiling system. the toons i would prefer to be animated (2 frames), and maybe some global items, but most would just be static 32x32 tiles... trees could be 32x64, just separated as 2 different tiles set (as can be found in most final fantasy games)

as stated, registration is closed, but if this does sound interesting to you, shoot me an email so I can setup an account manually. For demonstration purposes, I am currently using a bunch of ff2 sprites to show proof of concept, etc.

I don't mind paying, but would prefer to partner with someone who takes it seriously in either a revshare or percentage depending on how indept the scope/involvement is - I'm the CTO for a tech company currently and this is entirely architected by me from server setup, load, db access, all code (php+ajax, etc). I've got a few other friends who I can trust coding wise, and plan to bring them on when the time is necessary. I prefer to keep projects on the smaller scale, rather than large and bloated...

Thanks for your time

Re: Looking for a spriter...

seems legit to me. i'd be interested, but i can't even handle the game i'm currently working on.

i think sprites is a pretty cool guy, eh makes pixels and doesn't afraid of anything.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

my curiosity is actually piqued

Re: Looking for a spriter...

I have to check some things on my front before I officially reply

Re: Looking for a spriter...

I'd like a look-see at the demo.

Do you intend for the pixel work to be exclusive to the game?

Re: Looking for a spriter...

usually it's like that, mjkrzak. Ain't no problem.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

Like, you enter a contract of any sort to sign onto a project, it's bad form for a graphics man to blatantly reuse or redistribute what he made for the game.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

Assuming it's a for-pay thing. Gratis work is another issue altogether.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

Where did you get that idea?

Re: Looking for a spriter...

you guys DO know what kind of site we run, right?

Just grew up on snes rpgs, looking at the current mmo scene there are a couple of decent ones, but most are garbage or take another avenue... I still prefer the 2d overhead style of gaming for classics, and an mmo feel on a final fantasy game pre-psx would be pretty sick imo...

Re: Looking for a spriter...

Rebuttal. Not for this thread.

Spritian, what is your preference with regard to redistribution of graphical assets outside of your project?

Re: Looking for a spriter...

I'm gonna delete the argument, I lost my head so I shouldn't screw the thread up.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

I've moved this back to general bullshit since the argument is now elsewhere. Focus, yo.

Yar.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

thanks, Onichi.

Personally, if someone wants to contribute and not get paid, thats fine as long as the game retains a license to use it inevitably for that sole domain etc. If someone is getting paid, I would suggest a tier. No different than website templates and designs... if you want this design its 40$, if you want to own it rightfully, it's 2000$ (as seen on templatemonster). My 2 cents.

Re: Looking for a spriter...

Update:

For those who saw it before, I decided to scrap the Ajax engine and just port everything over to flash...

There is a new version up here for those still interested, email me for a login if you need one.
